Herbert Wells and His Multiple ContributionsHerbert Wells is considered by many readers the founding father of contemporary science fiction. His most notable works include such novellas as The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The War of the Worlds. In this article, I would like to speak about the influence of this author on modern steampunk fiction writers. Overall, in his novels Herbert Wells always tried to describe people’s reaction to everything that contradicts their perception, norms, and expectations. The things may include dramatic technological changes, scientific discoveries, or even the invasion of aliens. Herbert Wells tries to understand how society can or may develop under certain circumstances. This is one of the key elements of steampunk fiction. The most prominent example is his novel The Time Machine which describes class differences and estrangement of people from one another. In part, this topic became a subject of many steampunk fiction novels. The only difference is that these writers attempt to recreate the course of history, while Wells was more interested in the future of humanity. Yet, his importance and contribution to steampunk fiction cannot be underestimated. Nowadays, the novellas by Herbert Wells are regarded as masterpieces of science fiction. Thousands of cheap essay writers wrote custom essays about them. I first read his books after seeing the film The Invisible Man. Since that time this author has always been one of my favorites. I would recommend him to every person who enjoys science fiction. |
